“Last summer, Mercury Players Theatre invited Wisconsin playwrights to enter its first short play competition. The only guideline other than length was that the plays be creatively linked to the month of May. The result of the competition is Mercury Rising, which opened last weekend and showcases the winning scripts in a production directed by Kelly Lee Kriesel and Tony Trout.

Lucky Numbers by Gwendolyn Quirk. “An insurance actuary and his wife, who are expecting their first child, may fall victim to statistical probability.” Interesting premise and nice creation of suspense on the part of the director. The main character doesnít so much resolve a central dramatic problem as come to terms with it. coreweekly readers might remember Quirk as the paperís theatre reviewer. She also holds a Masterís Degree from UW Madison; I imagine she got all Aís in her playwriting classes.”
